Battling
Algae?
If you have a recurring algae problem
it could be due to phosphates in the
water.
Phosphates Food for Algae
Nitrate and phosphate, along with carbon
are considered macro-nutrients, or primary foods, for algae.
Where Do Phosphates Come From?
There are three forms of phosphate: Orthophosphate,
metaphosphate (an inorganic complex which is also known as
polyphosphate), and organically bound phosphate. Organic phosphate
can come from farm runoff, leaves and fertilizer, as well
as bather wastes such as sweat and urine. Other phosphorus
compounds are found in detergents, insecticides, soft drinks,
tooth pastes and even some pool chemicals. All of these can
enter swimming pool water through various means.
How Much Phosphate is Too Much?
Algae can begin to thrive at levels as
low as 125 ppb (parts per billion) of orthophosphate. Pools
and ponds with high levels of phosphate, e.g. 1000 ppb will
often have obvious algae blooms.
If you are experiencing a problem with recurring
algae, Twin Lakes Pool & Spa can test your pool and/or
spa for phosphates. We also have qualified technicians to
treat and remove phosphates from your water.
